Trump claims that it was Iran that started the war talks and that they have reached “important points of agreement”
In comments as he was preparing to board the presidential plane Air Force One, US President Donald Trump assured that it was Iran that initiated the war talks, and stated that contacts with Iran are still being developed, in which the United States has “strong points of agreement” with the adversary country.
These talks began on Sunday, will continue this Monday and are led on the US side by their envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as noted. Both were already in charge of indirect negotiations with Tehran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program on the eve of the start of the war. “If an agreement occurs, it will be a great start for Iran and the region,” said the Republican, who stressed that he cannot “guarantee” that an agreement will be reached.
This morning, Trump announced that he will postpone attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure and power plants for five days, after having held “productive talks” with Iran. Shortly after, Iran has assured that it has not held direct talks or through intermediaries with the United States about the war, as published by the Fars and Tasnim agencies, linked to the Iranian regime.
Regarding Iran’s denial of the existence of these contacts, reported by that country’s news agencies, he ironically said: “Perhaps the report has not reached them. Their communications have been interrupted by the war, you know.”
In an interview with the Fox Business network, Trump has assured in parallel that “Iran really wants to reach an agreement”, and that “could happen in the next five days.”
Trump had threatened on Saturday with the “total” destruction of Iran if, within 48 hours, the regime did not unblock the passage through which around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied gas circulates.
