“Is the G7 still useful for anything? »asked Roland Lescure, at the end of 2025. A few months later, the French Minister of the Economy hosted the G7 Finance summit in Paris, bringing together finance ministers and central bank governors from member countries, Monday May 18 and Tuesday May 19. The heads of state of the G7 countries will meet in Evian (Haute-Savoie) from June 15 to 17.
Since its creation in 1975, at the initiative of France following the first oil crisis, this club of rich countries, which also includes Germany, Canada, the United States, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, has seen its weight decline, since it now represents only 30% of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP), compared to 68% in 1992. Despite this decline, none of the emerging countries, like Brazil, India or South Africa, or formerly emerging countries, such as China, have not been admitted.
The latter have therefore created competing forums, like the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), which brings together around twenty states, or the BRICS, made up of the main emerging economies. It is now the survival of the G7 club that is threatened since Donald Trump, who came to power in early 2025, shattered the consensus of the G7 countries around founding principles such as multilateralism or free trade. “Maintaining the unity of this club has become a daily battle”we recognize in Bercy.
