The United Nations has recommended not banning any political party in the demand to ban the ousted Awami League in the face of the coup. The recommendation was made in a report by the UN Human Rights High Commissioner's Office (OHCHR) published on Wednesday over human rights violations in July-August. The UN Information Search Party prepared this report at the invitation of the interim government.
The UN report highlighted that the government, led by Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, from July 1 to August 7 last year, had caused serious human rights violations such as extrajudicial killings, indiscriminate arrests, torture and additional force.
The UN is the primary idea that at least 1,500 people were killed in these incidents. Thousands of people were injured. Most of the casualties were fired. The children were about 12 percent of the casualties. At this time, 1,212 people were arrested.
In the face of the student movement, the then Sheikh Hasina government and the Awami League systematically caused many incidents of serious human rights abuses. Police, RAB and security forces and intelligence agencies were involved in it.
The UN High Commissioner's Office (OHCHR) released the report on Wednesday in Geneva, Switzerland. The 5 -page report was published on the incident of human rights violations from July 1 to August 8 last year through the organization's headquarters and online press conference.
It has made several recommendations, including not banning the political parties towards the interim government, abolishing the RAB, ensuring the independence of the judiciary and the use of deadly weapons in suppressing protests, stopping the mass uprising.
The Awami League student body Bangladesh Chhatra League has been banned long before the report was published. And last Friday, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives said that the present government will soon take steps to ban the Awami League as a political party. He said this in a special interview to the Bangladesh News Agency (BSS).
However, the United Nations said the political parties should refrain from banning the political parties. This is because it can really hinder the return of multi -party democracy in Bangladesh and a large number of voters can be virtually deprived of voting rights.
UN recommendation
The United Nations has asked to ensure a safe and helpful environment for free and fair elections by respecting basic freedom. For this reason, equal opportunity for all political parties and candidates should be ensured by reopening the special system. The United Nations has emphasized the strengthening of the monitoring institutions to balance the political parties on the administration.
According to the report, the right to participate in the democratic process through participatory system led by citizens can be actively and directly participated in the process of government activities and decision making.
The United Nations has said that a massive dialogue with political parties needs to be started to keep the party's internal management consistent with human rights policy.
The UN has also emphasized the implementation of laws and regulations effectively to ensure realistic equality between men and women in political and public life, including temporarily taking special measures in the right and in the right field.
