Four people died due to poisonous gas while cleaning a septic tank at a jewelery manufacturing unit in Surat city of Gujarat on Sunday morning. Police gave this information. Zone-1 Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar said that the primary cause of death appears to be suffocation, although the actual cause of death will be confirmed only after the postmortem report comes.
Alok Kumar said that the incident took place in a septic tank located in Ashwini Kumar area, in which the waste generated from the cleaning process of jewelery is collected. He said that the septic tank of the unit is cleaned and maintained every two months.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, a supervisor and three laborers had entered the tank on Sunday morning. Due to the effect of poisonous gas, they became unconscious and all four died. “We are investigating whose negligence is responsible for the incident as preliminary investigation indicates that safety standards were not followed,” the official said. The matter will be thoroughly investigated.

As soon as information about the incident was received, the fire brigade reached the spot.

Deputy Commissioner of Police said, “At present a case of accidental death is being registered.” We will also analyze CCTV footage to find out what security protocols should have been implemented and what arrangements were actually made. After this the responsibility will be fixed.
