The struggle for the revival of democracy must continue: Tariq Rahman

BNP acting chairman Tariq Rahman and party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir gave separate messages on the occasion of the fall of dictatorship and liberation of democracy day. Tariq Rahman said in the statement, “After the end of the misrule of fascist Sheikh Hasina, we must continue our relentless struggle for the complete revival of democracy and the establishment of democratic values in the state and society.”

In a statement sent to the media on Thursday, Tarek Rahman said, 'Democracy was liberated by defeating the dictatorship on December 6, 1990, with the combined strength of the students and the masses, following the continuation of the mass movement led by the uncompromising national leader Begum Khaleda Zia for nine years. In the spirit of that achieved democracy, the students once again defeated a violent fascist force on August 5, 2024. Fascist Awami League was a terrible enemy of democracy. '

Tariq Rahman said, “During the misrule of Sheikh Hasina, the “Mother of Democracy” country leader Begum Khaleda Zia was subjected to various levels of oppression, including imprisonment. Millions of leaders and workers of the country's nationalist forces were held in the octopus of torture. The whole country was turned into a suffocating prison. On this day, I pay deep respect to the memory of the brave martyrs who sacrificed themselves in the bloody anti-dictatorship movement from 82 to 90 and pray for the forgiveness of their souls. On this memorable day of restoration of democracy, I wish and congratulate the countrymen who are the guardians of democracy, who participated in the anti-dictatorship movement.'

Tariq Rahman also said, 'A huge wave of students resisted the evil forces on August 5. We call on the democratic forces to remain united at all times so that this defeated force does not re-emerge.' He said, 'After the end of the misrule of fascist Sheikh Hasina, we have to continue our relentless struggle for the complete revival of democracy and the establishment of democratic values in the state and society.'

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a separate message on the occasion of the day, 'On December 6, 1990, the people of the country crossed the golden gate of democracy through the fall of dictatorship, and constitutional continuity began. Even though the enemies of democracy have been defeated on this day, they have not remained silent. Awami, the enemy of democracy, started a continuous conspiracy with the fascists. Their combined power continues to weaken rather than strengthen democracy. Since 2009, fascists and dictatorships jointly pushed Bangladesh into the anarchy of one-party misrule.

Mirza Fakhrul said, “Time and again the evil forces have tried to disrupt our progress by subverting democracy. But the patriotic people resisted that attempt with strong hands all the time. Our democracy has repeatedly stumbled in its march. But democracy-loving people of this country have overcome all obstacles and paved the path of democracy. In exchange for the blood of thousands of martyrs, democracy was freed from the shackles of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024.

Secretary General of BNP said, 'There is a sense of relief in the minds of the people of this country due to one-party rule and one-sided elections. People hope that civil liberties will never again be endangered; There will be free, fair and participatory elections, people will be able to vote for the candidate of their choice without any hindrance. In any way, so that fascism does not rise again, the country does not fall into the cruel trap of disappearances, assassinations and crossfires, democratic values should be established everywhere in the state-society. Democracy-loving countrymen must work together so that one-party robber authoritarianism can no longer prevail.'
