Of the three centrist parties that formed the core of support for the Cypriot Government, one lost votes and the other two lost all parliamentary representation, in the legislative elections held this Sunday in Cyprus, which were marked by several corruption scandalsthe rise of the extreme right and the entry of new parties into the chamber. However, the two formations that have dominated Cypriot politics during the last half century maintained the type – and the number of seats -, thus stopping the erosion of their support base that they had been suffering in the last three decades. The conservative Democratic Group (DISY) won the elections with 27.1% of the ballots – 0.8% less than five years ago – and the communist Progressive Party of the Workers’ People (AKEL) rose 1.4% to 23.9% of the votes, according to the results published by the Ministry of the Interior’s website with 99.4% of the vote counted.
