Israel rejects the composition of the peace council, created under the aegis of Donald Trump, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey

Israel announced on Saturday January 17 that it was contesting the composition of the committee responsible for administering the Palestinian Gaza Strip, the creation of which was announced on Wednesday by Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, as part of Donald Trump’s peace plan.

“The announcement of the composition of the Gaza steering committee, which reports to the peace council (set up by Mr. Trump and directed by himself)was not coordinated with Israel and goes against its policies”says a press release from the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This council will have the mission of supervising phase 2 of the Trump plan aimed at ending the war in Gaza, after three months of fragile ceasefire obtained under pressure from Washington. The American president, who promised the “largest and prestigious council ever assembled”considers the peace council as an essential cog in its policy aimed at putting an end to more than two years of bombing by the Israeli army in the Palestinian territory.

After receiving an invitation, Argentine President Javier Milei said it would be a ” honor “ to sit there. The Canadian leader, Mark Carney, would also intend to participate, according to one of his advisers. The Turkish president’s communication simply said that Recep Tayyip Erdogan had received the invitation and his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, “studies the question”according to his head of diplomacy.

These leaders are invited to join the US Secretary of State Marco Rubiowho wears multiple hats within Donald Trump’s government, and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who has already played mediator in the Middle East.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad received coldly the announcement of the constitution of a peace council for Gaza, believing that its members had been chosen to serve the interests of Israel. “We were surprised by the composition of the so-called “peace council” and by the names announced, chosen according to Israeli criteria and serving the interests of the occupation, which clearly testifies to premeditated negative intentions regarding the implementation of the agreement” ceasefire, in force since October 10, 2025 in the Gaza Strip, writes Islamic Jihad in a press release.
