BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, I replied to a journalist's question, if the interim government is not neutral, then there is a need for a neutral government during the elections. I have said this because we see that the interim government is not able to play a neutral role in some matters. We expect the interim government to play a neutral role.
On the occasion of the 56th death anniversary of Shaheed Asad, he said these things at the discussion meeting organized by Shaheed Asad Parishad at the auditorium of the National Press Club on Thursday (January 23).
Mirza Fakhrul said, 'Bureaucracy is playing the same role in all administrations starting from the secretariat as it was before. No changes have been made. Education has been completely stopped in universities, education is not being done in schools and colleges. The health system has almost collapsed. They come from the past. It is not possible to change them in such a short time. That is why we are saying that the election should be quick. The government that will come after the election, they will be responsible to fulfill the political commitment.
Commenting that we have been deprived of elections for almost 15 years, he said, 'Elections should be quick. People will have the opportunity to choose their representatives through elections. If that issue is forced into dispute, the people will be deprived of their rights.'
BNP Secretary General said, 'It is not important who comes in the election, it is important to establish the rights of the people. We have fought for that for 15 years. That is why we have high expectations from the current interim government. Naturally, public expectations rose after the student coup. But now we can't be sure that our expectations will be met with the current state of the society.
He also said, 'Each political party has different programmes. They want to continue those programs. But one thing everyone agrees on is that there needs to be an election. Elections are necessary not only to put a party in power, but also to create a democratic path.'
Regarding Shaheed Asad, Mirza Fakhrul said, 'Shaheed Asad is a name of love for those of us who were involved in the 1979 student uprising. Asad is an inspiration in the struggle we have had. No matter how much the name is in textbooks or no one remembers, no one can separate Shaheed Asad from history. Asad will be immortal in the history of the freedom struggle of this country.
He also said, 'We have forced a fascist ruler to leave the country as a result of the mass uprising of the twenty-four students. Ayub Khan, the then military ruler, was forced to leave in the popular uprising of 1969. But we failed to meet our target.'
President of Shaheed Asad Parishad. BNP Chairperson's Advisor Amanullah Aman, Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon, Chief Coordinator of Mass Solidarity Movement Jonaid Saki and others also spoke in the discussion meeting under the chairmanship of Mahbubullah.
