Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman said, “In 1971, Jamaat-e-Islami was the opposition force of the liberation war, it has become an established fact through the passage of the law in the parliament.” The law minister said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the May Day discussion meeting in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenaidah on Friday (May 1) morning.
Asaduzzaman said, ‘Jamaat has no moral place to say that their predecessors did not oppose Bangladesh during the liberation war. Because in this Parliament we have passed an Act – “National Freedom Fighters Council Amendment Act 2026”. There is a definition in that law.’
Regarding the definition, the law minister said, ‘those who fought for the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 against the Pakistani invaders and their local allies Razakar, Albadar and Alsams, then Muslim League, Jamaat-e-Islami and Nizam-e-Islami Party, are the freedom fighters. That means, the then Jamaat-e-Islami opposed the liberation war, opposed independence.
Asaduzzaman also said, ‘When we brought the bill to the parliament, Jamaat-e-Islami did not oppose this bill. Jamaat-e-Islami was silent on passing this bill. That is, silence is a sign of consent. And the NCP (National Citizen Party) took a position with the government in favor of this bill in writing. I have said in Parliament, even the Hon’ble Home Minister has said, that there will be no further discussion on this subject.’
Asaduzzaman said in response to the questions of the journalists after the discussion meeting, ‘BNP will do whatever it takes to implement the July charter. But there is fraud in one part of the referendum. BNP is not part of the fraud.’
