Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk sparked a new controversy by commenting that social media Instagram is ‘for girls’. X’s owner taunts men who share their Instagram profiles with him.
In response to a viral thread about social media habits and online trends, X Elon Musk wrote, ‘Instagram is for girls.’ The thread discussed how people’s online habits reflect the different ‘stages’ of their lives.
The discussion mentions some common Instagram trends; These include posting appealing pictures (thirst trap), uploading stories throughout the day and sharing pictures of home-cooked meals.
Musk later added another comment, saying that when grown men send him their Instagram profiles, he wonders if they’re “transitioning or something.” He writes, ‘Naturally. Sometimes grown men send me their Instagram profiles and I’m like, are you guys transitioning or something?’
Musk’s post quickly went viral and many social media users called his comments sexist and offensive.
One netizen wrote, “A 54-year-old man saying ‘LMAO’ is more Instagrammable than a girl.”
Another commented, ‘These grown men may actually be women trying to trick you into cheating. There is nothing but fakes to be found there.’
Another user wrote, ‘There should be a separate app called “Brostagram” for men. Because it could explain their pouting, dim lighting and 47 selfies standing in front of a mirror.’
Another commented, ‘Yeah, of course if you owned it (Instagram), it would be for “super duper alpha masculine men”…right Elon?’
Elon Musk has often criticized apps owned by Meta Platforms. At the same time, he promoted X as a more open and necessary alternative.
His daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson, who had previously broken up with Musk, publicly announced her gender transition (transgender) on Instagram and later began to distance herself from Musk. In 2022, she legally changed her name and gender and announced that she no longer wanted to be associated with Mask in ‘any way, shape or form’.
Musk later made controversial comments about his child’s gender transition and blamed their strained relationship on ‘Oak Culture’ or a culture of hyper-awareness. He said, ‘I took an oath to destroy the “Oak Mind” virus. We are also making some progress in this regard.’
