Egypt is considering exporting electricity to Syria via Jordan

Egypt is considering exporting electricity to Syria via Jordan, but this remains subject to the stability of the security and political conditions in Damascus, according to Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, in statements to Al-Sharq.

The minister said on the sidelines of the Arab Electricity Ministers Conference held in Cairo that the export will take place through the electrical interconnection line between Egypt and Jordan.

The minister's statements come after the country went through a crisis in providing electricity to consumers during the summer, which caused scheduled power outages, for periods of up to three hours a day, alternating between various regions in the republic, due to the shortage of natural gas necessary to operate power stations.

Egypt has an interest in electrical interconnection in general with neighboring countries, as it is embarking on an electrical interconnection process with Saudi Arabia, and the electrical interconnection line between the two countries is scheduled to enter service in May or June 2025, with an initial capacity of 1,500 megawatts out of the total capacity of the line, which amounts to 3,000 megawatts, according to Statements of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly last October. Cairo also signed a preliminary agreement with Greece regarding the establishment of a giant submarine cable across the Mediterranean to connect the two countries.

The statements of the Egyptian Minister of Electricity coincide with plans to enhance electrical connectivity between Arab countries in general. The Arab Electricity Ministers Conference, at its fifteenth session in Cairo, witnessed the launch of two agreements on the common Arab electricity market with the aim of enhancing the stability of supplies, reducing costs, and supporting investments in renewable energy, according to a statement issued by the League of Arab States.
