Kolkata . The Central Government launched the 'Jalavahak' scheme to promote movement of goods through inland waterways. The scheme is a major step towards promoting sustainable and cost-effective transportation on National Waterways-1 (Ganga), 2 (Brahmaputra) and 16 (Barak River). Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off three cargo ships and inaugurated the scheduled service of the ships.

He said the scheme aims to open up the trade potential of inland waterways as well as reduce logistics costs and decongest the road and rail networks. Under the scheme, cargo owners transporting goods for distances more than 300 kilometers through waterways will get reimbursement of up to 35 percent on operating costs. The scheme will be valid for three years and is designed to optimize supply chains for major freight companies, freight forwarders and trade bodies.

The scheme will be jointly implemented by Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Inland and Coastal Shipping Limited (ICSL), a subsidiary of Shipping Corporation of India. The fixed-time sailing service will ply vessels between the Kolkata-Patna-Varanasi and Kolkata-Pandu (Guwahati) routes, demonstrating the readiness of the waterways for efficient and environment-friendly freight transportation.
