Egypt will launch an international tender next year to implement the sixth metro line

The Egyptian government plans to launch an international tender to implement the sixth metro line, with a length of 34 kilometers, in the middle of next year, at a cost of about $3 billion, according to two government sources who spoke with Al-Sharq on condition that their names not be published.

The currently proposed project route aims to connect the areas of northern and southern Cairo via 26 metro stations.

One of the people who spoke with Al-Sharq said that the alliances that will compete in the tender will be obligated to provide a soft financing offer from European institutions, to cover the foreign part of the business, which includes electrical and mechanical systems, signals, communications, central control, importing ticket gates, and the train deal that will be completed. Contracted later.

He added that the tunnels authority will save the cost of civil works, the dues of which are paid in Egyptian pounds.

The Ministry of Transport usually requires, when contracting for major infrastructure projects such as the metro or electric traction lines, that competing companies provide financing offers from international institutions that cover the foreign component of the construction or manufacturing process, with the government’s role limited to financing the local component only.

The other source said that it is planned to actually begin work on the project during the year 2027 for a period of 8 years, as the track will be constructed in two phases.

The “National Tunnels” is currently completing the construction work of the fourth line of the metro, with a length of 19 kilometers, in addition to completing the first line of the high-speed train network, which extends from Ain Sokhna to New Alamein, then Marsa Matrouh Governorate, with a length of 675 kilometers, and its operation is targeted for the beginning of the second quarter of 2025. .

It is also working on completing the construction work and building two suspended monorail lines with lengths of up to 100 kilometers, with the aim of linking the city of 6th of October, located in the north of the country, with the new administrative capital. It aspires to open the first phases of the project at the beginning of next year, in addition to implementing a subway line in Alexandria Governorate overlooking… The coast of the White Sea is 21.7 km long and is scheduled to open in mid-2026.
