7 French families sue TikTok after two children commit suicide

Seven French families have filed a lawsuit against the short video platform TikTok. The lawsuit alleges the platform is exposing teenagers to harmful content. And two 15-year-old French children committed suicide as a result. This information is known in the report of the British media The Guardian.

Last Monday, lawyer Laure Butron-Marmion said TikTok's algorithm showed the seven teenagers videos that were promoting content about suicide, self-harm and eating disorders.

The families are taking joint legal action at the Crétil Court of Justice in Paris. Butron-Marmion said it was the first such collective case in Europe.

He said, 'Parents are asking that TikTok's legal liability be recognized in court. He added, 'It is a commercial establishment that is used exclusively by minors. . So they should accept liability for product defects.

Like other social media platforms, TikTok has long been criticized for content regulation.

TikTok, like Facebook and Instagram, is facing hundreds of lawsuits in the United States. Allegedly, it has attracted and addicted millions of children to its platform, which has damaged their mental health.

Several states and the District of Columbia filed lawsuits against the Chinese-owned company last month. The lawsuits allege that TikTok is offering a product that harms children's mental health and is designed to be addictive.

In response to the lawsuits, a TikTok spokesperson said, “We do not agree with these allegations, which we believe are largely false and misleading.”

Earlier, the company said that they take children's mental health issues seriously.

This year, TikTok CEO Shou Ji Chiu told US lawmakers that the company is investing in measures to protect young people who use the app.
