The government on Monday said that passengers in flights will be able to use internet service through Wi-Fi only when electronic devices are allowed to be used in the aircraft after reaching an altitude of 3,000 meters in the Indian air space.

This clarification from the government has come under the new Flight and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024. Earlier in 2018, it was mandated that mobile communication services in aircraft could be started only when the aircraft reached a minimum altitude of 3,000 meters to avoid interference with terrestrial mobile networks.

Now according to the new rule, even after reaching this height, internet service through Wi-Fi will be provided only when the use of electronic devices is allowed.

Captain has the authority to turn on or off Wi-Fi in flight

The flight captain will have the authority to turn Wi-Fi on or off. Also Wi-Fi will be on when the aircraft is at stable speed. At the same time, it will have to be kept closed during take-off or landing.
