Three people were killed in the ongoing violent protest against the amended Waqf Act Amendment in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Indian media reported on NDTV that the violence began in the Muslim majority Murshidabad district on Friday. Since then, the state police have arrested five people.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that the revised waqf law will not be implemented in her state. In a post on social media X on Saturday, Mamata said, 'This law center has been created. If you oppose it for some reason, the center should ask for the answer. We do not support this law. This law will not be implemented in our state. '
The Chief Minister's post comes at a time when several areas of the state, especially the minority -dominated Murshidabad district, have been heated in protest of the revised Waqf Act.
Chief Minister Mamata has urged people of all religions to maintain peace and harmony in the state. He said, “My sole appeal to all people of all religions, please be calm, restrained. Do not behave in the name of religion. The lives of every human being are valuable, do not put riot in the interest of politics. Those who are riots are doing harm to society. '
Referring to this law was enacted by the central government, he said, “Remember that many people are agitated against the law, but we did not. The law has been made by the central government. So the answer to the central government should be asked for the answer. '
The new law spread violence in Malda, Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts of West Bengal yesterday. Several cars, police vans were burnt. The stones were thrown towards the security forces and the road was blocked.
West Bengal Police Director General Rajiv Kumar has warned the protesters. “The state police will not tolerate the law and order situation in the name of protests,” he said.
The state BJP president Sukant Majumder blamed the grassroots government for the situation in Murshidabad. In the post on social media X, he complained, 'The state administration is not taking appropriate action because of the minority exploration. If the BJP comes to power in West Bengal, such vandalism will be suppressed within five minutes of such vandalism. '
