Russia and Ukraine agree to the IAEA for a temporary ceasefire for electricity connection works in Zaporizhia
Russia and Ukraine agreed on Friday to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to implement a local ceasefire to repair the last remaining emergency power line at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, said the director of the international body, Rafael Grossi. Work should begin “in the coming days” on this line, damaged and taken out of service following military operations on January 2, the IAEA said in a press release. “This temporary ceasefire, the fourth that we have negotiated, demonstrates the indispensable role that we continue to play”estimated Mr. Grossi, quoted in the press release.
The UN agency based in Vienna, Austria, said its team « continu(ait) to hear numerous explosions, some of which were in the immediate vicinity of the site”. Elle “reported several air alerts per day over the past week and was informed of the sighting of a military flying object approximately 10 kilometers away” of the power station, it has affirmed the AIEA.
Zaporizhia, Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, has been occupied since March 2022 by Russian forces. Located along the Dnieper, its six reactors were shut down after the Russians took control of the plant. However, the site requires electricity to maintain its cooling and security systems. Moscow and kyiv have accused each other, reciprocally and on several occasions, of risking a nuclear catastrophe by attacking the site.
