Many people use TikTok filters to create interesting content. Anyone can change their appearance using filters. Through this, someone's face can become like a tiger and someone's hair can become a different color. But there are some 'beauty filters' which are used by users with the aim of 'enhancing beauty'. However, in order to maintain the mental health of young people, TikTok will no longer allow teenagers to use these filters on the platform. This means that the Chinese platform will not allow those under 18 to use 'beauty filters'.
In addition to reviewing three lawsuits filed against the platform regarding the impact on young people's mental health, the company has decided to jointly conduct research with a London-based non-profit organization called Internet Matters. TikTok says that within a few weeks, users under 18 'will not be able to use certain face-changing filters.'
The company says it won't stop TikTok from using filters 'designed for explicit or fun purposes'. But 'designed to change the look' will limit filters.
In other words, TikTok teens will still be able to use digital filters of their choice. However, they cannot use the 'Beauty Filter'. This age restriction will apply. The news was announced at the company's European Safety Forum. However, TikTok's safety and well-being public policy lead for Europe Dr. Nico So said these restrictions will be implemented globally.
TikTok is working on new 'machine learning technology' for younger users. This will stop users under the age of 13 from accessing the platform. However, TikTok has not yet given detailed information about this. Under-18 users lying about their age will also be controlled using this technology.
TikTok plans to launch in-app resources in '13 European countries' that will connect users to local helplines. which will help with a variety of issues including 'suicide, self-harm, hate, and harassment.
According to TikTok's report with Internet Matters, 'Beauty enhancement filters help create a distorted vision, where such perfect looks are accepted as normal'. This can create significant social pressure' online. In addition, TikTok has set a default screen time of one hour per day for users between the ages of 13 and 17.
