The Genoa subport tunnel will have an intermediate exit in the center

The municipal administration has officially confirmed the request to maintain the Genoa subport tunnel project «in its original configuration, i.e. with the construction of the intermediate exit for the city center, through the ramps of via delle Casaccie and via Madre di Dio, without any a priori provision for demolition of the Sopralevata (i.e. the Aldo Moro road, which crosses the Ligurian capital from Sampieradrena to Foce, ed.)». The announcement comes at the end of a meeting attended, among others, by the president of the Liguria Region and commissioner for reconstruction, Marco Bucci, the mayor, Sivia Salis, the deputy mayor of Genoa, Alessandro Terrile, the municipal councilor for Infrastructure, Massimo Ferrante, and the CEO of Autostrade per l’Italia, Arrigo Giana.

«The fate of the Sopralevata – the representatives of the Municipality write in a note – will be decided exclusively through a participatory process with the citizens. This comparison will be started only after the entry into operation of the subport tunnel in its entirety, when it will be possible to analyze the new traffic flows and the impact of the work on city traffic with certain data”.

During the meeting, the note continues, «the topic of the funds necessary to complete the inspections and monitoring of bridges and decks was addressed, as required by current national regulations. The objective is to guarantee maximum safety and plan any necessary restoration interventions. Those present accepted the Municipality’s proposal to find part of the necessary resources by drawing on the compensation agreement for the city signed following the collapse of the Morandi bridge. To formalize this step, a specific technical addendum to the existing agreement will be drawn up in the next few days.”

The commissioner body, for its part, specifies that the comparison «made it possible to clarify the main themes that emerged in the public debate: the management plans for the construction sites and roads were illustrated» and the overall budget of the work shows: «over 30 thousand vehicles per day removed from surface urban roads; significant reduction in city-port crossing times (up to 30-40%); reduction of emissions and improvement of air quality in the most congested areas”.

It was also confirmed, the commissioner body states, “that the interventions were designed in full compliance with the environmental and landscape requirements, with the involvement of the competent bodies, including the Superintendence, and with compensatory measures already defined and approved aimed at enhancing the urban greenery, with particular reference to the area of the new Foce park and the monumental greenery system of Viale delle Brigate Partigiane”.
