Tamim Iqbal once made his name on the honor board by scoring a century at Lord’s with the bat. After almost 16 years, he got another special honor in that historic field. The former Bangladesh captain and current BCB president has now received honorary life membership of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
Established in 1787, MCC is one of the most traditional institutions of cricket. Apart from playing an important role in preserving and developing the law of cricket, this club also owns the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
According to MCC data, Tamim became the third person from Bangladesh to receive this prestigious membership. Earlier in 2003 former BCB president Saber Hossain Chowdhury and in 2023 former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortuza achieved this recognition.
Along with Tamim, India’s veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, New Zealand women’s cricket legends Sophie Devine and Suzy Bates and former Australian cricketer and current commentator Melanie Jones have been given honorary life membership.
In 2010, Tamim got his name on the honors board by scoring a great century at Lord’s on the tour of England. He also scored a century at Old Trafford on the same tour. In recognition of that outstanding performance, he was later selected as one of the five cricketers of the year by the prestigious cricket publication ‘Wisden Cricketers Almanac’.
Congratulating the five new Life Honorary Members, MCC Chief Executive and Secretary Rob Lawson said, “We are delighted to welcome five outstanding cricketers as our new Life Honorary Members. They each deserve this recognition for their lifelong dedication to the game. We look forward to welcoming them to Lord’s as MCC members in the coming years.
