Punjab civic elections: Congress’s defeat in party chief Vading’s stronghold, what happened in Channi’s area?


In Giddarbaha Municipal Council, AAP won 17 out of 19 wards while Congress could win only two wards. Gidderbaha is considered to be the stronghold of Congress Punjab unit president and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding. However, in Chamkaur Sahib Municipal Council, Congress won seven wards, while AAP and independent candidates won three wards each. Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has been an MLA from Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency.

Whereas in Anandpur Sahib, Aam Aadmi Party won 11 out of 13 wards. In the Punjab civic elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won more than 45 percent of the wards till around 7 pm on Friday evening. Whereas the Chief Minister Bhagwant Maan Said that the public supported the developmental policies of the ruling party and defeated the ‘politics of hate’ of the opposition.

In how many wards did AAP win?

According to Punjab State Election Commission data, AAP won 886 out of total 1,977 wards while Congress came second by winning 358 wards, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won 178 wards while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hoisted the flag of victory in 153 wards. Independent candidates also performed well in these urban local body elections and won in 246 wards. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) also won in six wards.

Results of more than 130 wards not declared yet

According to the Commission, the results of more than 130 wards have not been declared yet and counting of votes is going on. Officials said that the counting of votes started at 8 am on Friday amid tight security arrangements. On AAP’s victory before the assembly elections to be held early next year in Punjab, Chief Minister Mann said that the public has approved the development work of the AAP government. He said that the people of Punjab defeated the politics of hatred of the opposition. Mann said, “The public has rejected parties doing divisive politics.”

Were elections held on 26th May through ballot paper?

Elections to 102 municipal bodies, 75 municipal councils and 19 nagar panchayats in 1,897 wards of eight municipal corporations of Mohali, Bathinda, Abohar, Barnala, Kapurthala, Moga, Batala and Pathankot were held through ballot papers on May 26, in which 63.94 percent voting was recorded. Candidates were elected unopposed in 80 out of 1,977 wards in the state. 7,554 candidates were in the fray in these local body elections. The complete results of eight municipal corporations have not been declared yet.

In Dhuri Municipal Council, AAP won in 19 wards, while independent candidates were victorious in two wards. Chief Minister is MLA from Maan Dhuri assembly constituency. Before the assembly elections to be held next year, these civic elections are considered important for the major political parties of Punjab, AAP, BJP, Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
