The death toll in the violence that has been going on since Thursday in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (KPK) in Pakistan has reached 82, while 156 people are injured. Among those killed, 16 were Sunni and 66 were from Shia community. The attackers have taken many people, including women and children, hostage and are refusing to hand over the bodies.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister Aftab Alam said, “Today our first effort is to achieve a ceasefire between the two groups. As soon as this happens, we will try to reach an agreement between the two sides. According to Pakistani media, there is still fighting in many areas of the district. Sporadic firing continues between the two groups.

There has been a long standing conflict between the tribes of Shia and Sunni communities in Kurram district.
Attack on convoy going from Parachinar to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
On Thursday, more than 50 passenger vans were fired upon in Manduri and Ochhat of Kurram district, in which 6 vans were heavily damaged. All these vehicles were going in a convoy from Parchinar to Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. There has been a decades-long conflict between the Alizai (Shia) and Bagan (Sunni) tribes in the Shia-dominated Kurram district bordering Afghanistan.

On Thursday, a convoy of vehicles was going to Peshawar which was attacked.
Terrorists became safe haven due to border dispute There has always been tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan regarding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Because of this, many terrorist groups use it as a shelter. Apart from this, land disputes have been going on among the tribes living here for a long time.
A major reason for the terrorist incidents happening here is the lack of mutual agreement between the two countries regarding the border area. Actually, Pakistan and Afghanistan are separated by a border. This is called Durand Line. Pakistan considers it as the boundary line, but Taliban clearly says that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa state of Pakistan is its part. Pakistani Army has fenced here with barbed wire.

When Pakistan had fenced the Durand Line, the Taliban had uprooted it.
Upon occupying Afghanistan, Taliban asked Pakistan to vacate this area and uprooted the fencing here. Pakistan protested against this and deployed army there. After this the Taliban blew up the Pakistani check posts present there. After this the tension between the two countries increased further.
