Our fight is to establish freedom of speech. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that we will make every effort to protect freedom of press, freedom of people, freedom of vote, freedom of people at any cost.
He said these things at a discussion meeting titled 'Independent Journalism and Media Institutions under Attack' organized by Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) at the Meghna Hall of Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Thursday (November 28).
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, today even after 53 years, we have to talk about the attack on the media after the mass uprising of the students. I said the day before yesterday, before that I gave the statement, we condemn it. We think that our fight is for freedom of speech, the fight is for democracy. The point of this long fight is that I want to speak my mind.
He also said, I want to exercise my rights. Want to exercise voting rights. These things are very important. But unfortunately for us, today some people are trying to mislead the nation. Something being said, it seems to me, is leading to total anarchy. We all need to unite and stop it. Otherwise, the goal for which our sons gave their lives, our men gave their lives, will all fail.
Secretary General of BNP also said that we who have fought since the 1971 war, till today, we have fought for democracy. We have made a movement to create a democratic state system in the country. But sometimes there are actions that lead to depoliticization. We all need to consciously avoid it.
Stating that the elected government is better than any, Mirza Fakhrul said that the elected government is better than any government, whoever it may be. But I refuse to think that I will control or fix it. Let democracy be practiced, which has not happened in the last 53 years. Through practice we can move forward. He also mentioned that creating an anarchy or going towards an arbitrariness would be most harmful for the nation at this moment.
