Iraqi fighters have joined the fight against rebels in Syria

Hundreds of Iraqi fighters supported by Iran have entered Syria to fight against the rebels. On Monday (December 2), security sources said that regional militia groups allied with Iran are playing an important role in suppressing the rebels against President Bashar al-Assad in Syria with the help of the Russian Air Force. However, Lebanon's Hezbollah group is reported to have no plans to join the war right now. British news agency Reuters reported this news.

Iraqi and Syrian sources confirmed, More Iranian-backed Iraqi fighters are deployed in Syria.

Iran's foreign minister said Tehran would “provide any necessary assistance” to “resistance groups” to come to the aid of the Assad regime.

At least 300 Iraqi fighters entered Syria on Sunday night using a dirt road to avoid formal border crossings. Most of these fighters are members of Iraq's Badr and Nujaba clans.

Two Iraqi security sources said they went there to protect a Shiite shrine.

A senior Syrian military source said fighters crossed the border in small groups to avoid airstrikes. He said, more troops are being sent to help our partners on the northern front line.

But Lebanon's Hezbollah group has long been one of the most important forces in Assad's military coalition and the most capable Iran-backed force. The group has yet to receive a request to intervene in Syria. Three sources said they were not ready to send in new forces after a grueling confrontation with Israel recently.

Since the start of the anti-Assad uprising in 2011, cooperation with Iran-backed militia groups has brought success to the government. In particular, in 2016, the government took full control of Aleppo through a siege that was a major turning point in the Syrian war. The Syrian government now faces a new test as rebels suddenly take control of the city of Aleppo.

Even the head of Syria's main opposition group abroad, Hadi al-Bahra, told Reuters the rebels were able to capture the city so quickly because Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups were busy fighting Israel.

He said that preparations were being made for the attack on Aleppo since last year. However, it was suspended due to Gaza being involved in the war.

Syria's civil war has been on hold since 2020, after the Assad regime took control of most areas and all major cities.
