The national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines earned Tk 10,575 crore in the last financial year 2023-2024, which is 9.50 percent more than the previous financial year. The income-expenditure statement was released at Biman's Annual General Meeting (AGM) held last month.
General Manager (Public Relations) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Bosra Islam said that during this period, Biman has earned an operating profit of Tk 1,556 crore. However, a net profit of Tk 282 crore has been earned after exchange loss and tax.
AGM was held on December 21 under the chairmanship of Biman Board of Directors Chairman Abdul Mueed Chowdhury. Apart from all the members of the Biman Board of Directors, representatives of the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cabinet Division and Ministry of Commerce were present in the meeting.
It was informed in the AGM that Biman has continued its profit streak for the fourth time in a row after the Covid pandemic and the company has achieved net profit 8 times in the last 10 financial years. In the fiscal year 2023-2024, a total of 3 crore 36 lakh 3 thousand 685 passengers have been transported to 30 domestic and foreign destinations through 21 aircraft. This is almost one lakh more than the previous financial year. In addition, 43 thousand 44 metric tons of cargo was transported and earned 637 crore rupees, which is 60 percent more than the previous year.
In the fiscal year 2023-2024, Biman handled 350,222 metric tons of cargo at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, which is 33.1 percent more than the previous fiscal year. Biman provides ground handling services to 32 foreign passenger airlines and 17 cargo airlines. In this financial year, ground handling services have been provided to 66 lakh 32 thousand 760 passengers of 33 thousand 297 flights of foreign airlines.
In a press release, Biman claimed that Biman has not received any subsidy from the government in the last 53 years. It has paid USD 105 million equivalent to Tk 12,574 crore till November 2024 for the purchase of 13 new aircraft from its own funds (including loan and interest).
