Former IPL chairman and cricket administrator Lalit Modi described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘big fan of cricket’ and said that most of the conversations between him and PM Modi were about the development of cricket infrastructure in Ahmedabad. In an exclusive interview to ANI in London, Lalit Modi said that PM Modi always showed keen interest in the development of cricket in Gujarat.

‘Our conversations were only about cricket’
Lalit Modi said, ‘Narendra Modi was a big fan of cricket. He was interested in the cricket infrastructure in Ahmedabad and our conversation was limited to cricket. He further said, ‘I was close to Narendra Modi, but that closeness was about cricket, not about politics.’

‘I was not criticizing the stadium’
Clarifying his earlier statement, Lalit Modi said that he was not criticizing the stadium, but was talking about a bigger vision for Indian sports infrastructure. He said, ‘Today it is the best stadium in India, but it is not enough. I said I would drop it. If I talk about demolishing it, then the rest of the stadiums will also have to be demolished. I had clearly said that this is the best stadium in India today. But if I want to give an international level fan experience, I will recreate this too.

Lalit Modi says that considering the economic power and global influence that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has today, India should build stadiums that can match the most prestigious sports grounds in the world. He said, ‘Today you see Wembley Stadium, Lord’s, Barcelona’s Camp No, Manchester United’s Old Trafford and Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium. All these are much better than any of our stadiums. Today BCCI has more money than ever before, so we should think on a bigger level.
