German chancellor faces confidence vote after collapse of coalition government

The country's center-right opposition leader demanded a confidence vote after the collapse of the coalition government led by Germany's center-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Friedrich Merz, head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and former chancellor Angela Merkel's party leader, demanded on Thursday that Shultz's confidence vote be brought forward. British media The Guardian reported this news.

After sacking Finance Minister Christian Lindner at an emergency news conference Wednesday night, Schultz said a formal confidence vote would be held in January. That would create the possibility of an early election in March. However, Merz said on Thursday morning that there was no reason to hold the confidence vote in January.

Referring to Shultz's three-party coalition as a 'traffic light', Merz said, “This coalition has expired”.

Merz also said his party had unanimously called on Schultz to move the schedule forward by a week to hold a confidence vote in parliament. If the confidence vote is held, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will have 21 days to decide whether to dissolve the lower house of parliament. That could pave the way for an election in late January.

Fierce debate over economic policies is being cited as the main reason for the rift within the coalition. Friedrich Merz said the CDU and other parties are trying to reach an agreement on the budget, but the Scholz government's procrastination is complicating the situation.

Alexander Dobrint, the leader of the Bavarian branch of the CDU, said that in view of Germany's current weak economic growth and crisis in the industrial sector, people cannot be treated with such disrespect.

The opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now slightly ahead of Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the polls. They quickly demanded fresh elections. The AfD and the new conservative left-wing party Saar Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) have recently done well in local elections. Their success may complicate the political situation in the upcoming elections.

The impact of this confidence vote in the context of international politics could also be huge. Shultz's government's role during the Ukraine crisis has also been criticized. Friedrich Merz said he would continue to support Ukraine, especially because of fears of a US funding crisis. In addition, Green Party Foreign Minister Annalena Bierbock mentioned the need for Germany to lead as an important economic power in Europe.

According to German political analysts, the results of this confidence vote may give the radical parties additional support. Political analyst Wolfgang Schroeder said 70-80 percent of the German people want a stable and responsible leadership, which can reduce the influence of extremists in critical moments.
