Born into a Pakistani family in Tooting, South London, Sir Sadiq works as a human rights lawyer. His father was a bus driver. In 2005, he entered parliament as an MP from his hometown on the nomination of the Labor Party. He served as a junior minister under Gordon Brown and later as justice minister in the shadow government under Ed Miliband.

Sadiq Khan was elected Mayor of London in 2016, succeeding Boris Johnson, defeating Conservative Party candidate Jack Goldsmith. He was the first Muslim to be elected as the first mayor of a major city in the western developed world. He served as the Mayor of London for three consecutive terms.
