The Assam Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill on Wednesday (27 May 2026). After Uttarakhand and Gujarat, Assam has now become the third state in the country, which has adopted this law. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has thanked the NDA MLAs after passing this bill.
‘People of every religion will get equal rights’
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X and wrote, ‘With the passing of the Uniform Civil Code Bill in the Assam Assembly today, people of every religion living here will get equal rights before the law in civil matters. I heartily thank all the NDA MLAs for fully supporting this important bill.
He said, ‘Assam will continue to move forward with reforms that strengthen society, provide justice to women, protect families and promote mutual unity among communities. The passing of the UCC Bill by the Assam Assembly is not just a legal reform, but a step towards a more just and united future. This is a historic and extremely important moment in the history of Assam, as we become the third state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). With this we have also fulfilled the wishes of the makers of the Constitution of our country.
Why was there a need to bring UCC: Opposition
On Monday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora had introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assam Assembly. MLAs and ministers of the ruling party are saying that UCC is beneficial for all sections. At the same time, leaders of opposition parties are continuously opposing it. Congress legislature party leader Wajed Ali Chaudhary said, ‘The subjects mentioned in the Uniform Civil Code are already implemented through different laws. Child marriage, polygamy, registration of marriage and divorce, alimony and other issues are governed by various laws. Then why was there a need to bring UCC?
