CJI DY Chandrachud Bids Farewell as India's 50th Chief Justice, Reflects on Legacy and Future of Judiciary ANN


CJI DY Chandrachud Farewell: The 50th Chief Justice of India Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud sat in his court for the last time on Friday (8 November 2024). The Chief Justice is in office till Sunday, November 10. But due to the judges not sitting in the Supreme Court on Saturday and Sunday, today was his last day in the courtroom. A formal farewell bench was organized for him. The country's next Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna sat with him in this bench. Justice Chandrachud has been known for giving full opportunity to every lawyer who comes to his court to speak. The humble Chief Justice said, “I tried my best. Still, if my conduct has hurt anyone, please forgive me.”

On May 13, 2016, Justice Chandrachud became the judge of the Supreme Court. Before this he was the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court. On 9 November 2022, he became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. During his tenure in the Supreme Court, he took many big decisions or was part of big decisions. Even on the last day of his tenure, he repealed a 1967 decision that came in the way of granting minority institution status to Aligarh Muslim University. In the last week of his tenure as Chief Justice, he gave big decisions like upholding the UP Madrasa Act and following the legal process before demolishing someone's house.

Justice Chandrachud was a member of the 5-judge bench that gave the verdict on the Ayodhya case in 2019. this year Lok Sabha elections Before this, he had declared the Electoral Bond scheme of election funding as unconstitutional. He justified the abolition of special status of Jammu and Kashmir in the Article 370 case. Refused to recognize gay marriage. Ordered to give permanent commission to women military officers in the army.

Justice Chandrachud also made many important administrative changes during his tenure as Chief Justice. He played a major role in expanding video conferencing hearings in courts across the country. He made video links of Supreme Court hearings available to the common people. Lawyers were encouraged to work through tabs or laptops instead of bringing files to the court in the old manner. Apart from creating special facilities for the disabled in the Supreme Court, he also opened 'Mitti Café' run by the disabled in the Supreme Court premises. Till now the camerapersons of TV channels coming to the Supreme Court used to sit under the open sky. Chief Justice Chandrachud, who had a sensitive nature, built a shed for him.

In his farewell speech, Chief Justice Chandrachud thanked the lawyers for arriving in large numbers. He discussed the Jain proverb “Michhami Dukkadam” in Prakrit language. It means, “May whatever bad I have done come to an end.” Using this proverb, he said, “If I have ever offended anyone in court, please forgive me.”

Justice Chandrachud thanked God for his life so far. He said that as a judge, he got the opportunity to bring positive changes in the lives of people whom he never met. He praised Sanjeev Khanna, who is going to become Chief Justice after him. Chief Justice Chandrachud said, “I am rest assured. I am handing over the judiciary to a capable leadership.”
