Governor of the Kaliningrad region Alexey Besprozvannykh commented on the words of ex-Deputy Foreign Minister of Lithuania Darius Yurgelevicius about a possible blockade of the region with a phrase from Sergei Eisenstein’s film “Alexander Nevsky”.
Earlier, Jurgelevicius said in an interview with the Ukrainian YouTube channel “Think” that NATO has a ready-made scenario for the blockade of Kaliningrad in the event of a direct conflict with Russia.
“I came across a thoughtless statement from the former deputy head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry. I would like to answer this with a still from a famous film. And so that it would come faster, in a language he understands: Kas su kalaviju pas mus ateis, tas nuo kalavijo ir žus (“Whoever comes to us with a sword will die by the sword.” – RBC)», — wrote Besprozvanshikh in the telegram channel.
An attempt to blockade the Kaliningrad region could lead to a sharp increase in tension and outgrow into a large-scale military conflict, President Vladimir Putin said in December.
After being asked on a direct line about Russia’s possible response to the blockade of the region by European states, the president expressed hope that such a scenario could be avoided, but stressed that any threats would be suppressed, and such actions would lead to an unprecedented escalation and expansion of the conflict.
Previously in Lithuania allowed transit restrictions to Kaliningrad as one of the harsh measures of pressure on Russia and Belarus. In June 2022, the republic already banned the rail transit of some cargo due to EU sanctions, after which the main flow of supplies to the region switched to the sea route. There were also calls in the West for forceful pressure on Kaliningrad.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the security of the region will be ensured by all means. Moscow regards such statements as a threat and uses them as justification for measures to strengthen defense.
