Arab Finance – Establishing two separate power storage plants.


Arab Finance: Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, held a meeting with Sheikh Hussein Al -Nuwais, President of Amea Power, affiliated to the group Emirati NuisAt the Ministry’s headquarters in the administrative capital, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation and increase the company’s investments in the fields of renewable energy and store energy using batteries, as well as establishing the first separate storage stations in Egypt to support the stability of the electrical network at peak times and maximize the benefit of renewable energy.

This comes within the framework of the Ministry’s strategy to increase dependence on clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, rationalize traditional fuel consumption, and raise the contribution of renewable energy to 42% of the energy mix by 2030, and 65% by 2040, while supporting the participation of private sector in implementing projects.

During the meeting, the Minister reviewed the developments of the “Abydos 2” solar energy project with a capacity of 1000 megawatts, and the storage station connected to a capacity of 600 megawatts batteries, in Aswan Governorate, in addition to the “Amont 2” wind energy project with a capacity of 500 megawatts in Ras Shuqair.

The steps for implementing the first energy storage project were discussed through separate stations on the unified electrical network with a capacity of 1500 megawatts, in the governorates of Aswan and the Red Sea, in addition to discussing opportunities to increase the company’s investments in the Egyptian market, and future cooperation plans to ensure the stability of the electrical network and provide the necessary nutrition during peak periods.

Dr. Esmat pointed out that the electricity sector has entered for the first time in Egypt the energy storage systems with batteries during the past months, where a station is currently operating in Aswan carried out by Amea Power with a capacity of 300 megawatts an hour of storage.

He affirmed the continued expansion of the construction of storage stations, especially separate, within the network support and raising its efficiency, stressing that the private sector is a major partner in implementing the national energy strategy, praising the commitment of the Emirati company to implementation schedules and work plans, which opens wider horizons for more future partnerships.
