Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami strongly condemned and protested the arrest of a woman worker of the party named Bibi Sauda in Bhola. Terming the arrest as ‘undemocratic behavior’ by the government, the party demanded his unconditional release.
Secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Women’s Division Noorunnisa Siddika made this demand in a statement sent to the media on Tuesday.
Commenting on the reason for the arrest of Bibi Sauda for criticizing the government’s policy, Nurunnisa Siddiqa said in a statement, ‘Bholer Bibi Sauda (37) is an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami women’s division, who expressed his opinion on the country’s energy situation and state affairs on Facebook. On the night of 5th April 2026, the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell of the District Intelligence Branch conducted a raid under Bhola Sadar Model Police Station and arrested him from his home. Later he was challaned before the learned Court under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and an order of remand in jail was sought. His “crime”—criticizing government policy.’
Pointing out that arresting a woman at night is not a legal process, Nurunnisa Siddiqa said, ‘It is not a legal process to arrest a woman from her home at night. Using cybercrime cells to arrest citizens for Facebook posts — ominous for democratic Bangladesh.’
The statement Noorunnisa Siddiqui further said, ‘It cannot be a normal incident to be taken away from home in the middle of the night. Extreme interference in women’s freedom of expression, women’s empowerment is said. But women’s democratic rights have been undermined. It is indicative of a regime of fear. We will not accept incidents like arresting women in post-revolutionary countries.’
He said, ‘Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Women’s Division strongly condemns and protests this incident. This incident is a manifestation of the undemocratic behavior of the government. We demand immediate and unconditional release of Bibi Sauda. At the same time, I call on the government to pay special attention to ensuring the freedom and safety of expression of all women in the country.
