Iran accuses the UN Human Rights Council of “exaggerating” internal problems to justify aggression
The UN Human Rights Council and related bodies such as its International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran have “deliberately exaggerated” internal issues in the country to “normalize hostility against it” and justify the aggression it is currently suffering, the Iranian delegation to the United Nations in Geneva said.
“With this sustained political pressure, accompanied by propaganda, Iran ended up being considered a legitimate target,” stressed the Iranian ambassador to the UN Ali Bahraini, who pointed out that the “unfair complaints” of some countries before the Human Rights Council “laid the foundations for the aggression we are seeing.” This aggression, he added, is being perpetrated by “some of the least scrupulous actors on the scene,” alluding to the United States and Israel.
The Human Rights Council dedicated a section of its debates this Monday to the abuses of fundamental freedoms in Iran, supported by a report presented by the UN investigative mission for that country. This, however, covers the period before the start of the war on February 28, and condemns, among other points, the ayatollah regime’s violent repression of thousands of protesters in January.
According to the Iranian ambassador, what the Council should debate in its sessions is “the massacre of girls sitting at their desks,” or the aggression against a “people whose millennia-old heritage is being destroyed,” in relation to the bombings by Israel and the United States.
Countries such as Russia, China and Venezuela avoided any criticism of the regime’s repression in their interventions and focused their speeches on condemning the aggression of the United States and Israel, which in the words of the Russian delegation “is trying to destroy Iran” while “Western countries seek to justify it.”
China expressed its rejection of “the politicization of human rights” and its concern that the attacks on Iran were launched when the country was in the middle of negotiations with the United States.
The Venezuelan delegation stressed that “the politicization of human rights and double standards are not acceptable” against a country that, he recalled, has also suffered the serious impact of unilateral sanctions. (Efe)
