Farewell meeting of the World Bank Country Director with the Chief Adviser


Abdullah Sek, Country Director of the World Bank assigned to Bangladesh, had a farewell meeting with the Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. The meeting was held on Monday (December 23) evening at the Rashtriya Guest House, Yamuna. The press wing of the Chief Adviser reported this information.

The Chief Adviser expressed his gratitude to Sek, who retired in January, saying that under his leadership, Bangladesh has achieved success in key sectors such as infrastructure, climate resilience, digitization of service processes, education, healthcare and poverty alleviation with the support of the World Bank.

Sek said that on December 19, the World Bank approved three financings of about 1.2 billion dollars for the development of climate tolerance, environmental sustainability and health, nutrition and water-sanitation services in Chittagong city.

Earlier, two financing agreements were signed between the Economic Relations Department (ERD) and the World Bank on Sunday. The two deals are worth $90 million in funding.

Sek also mentioned that since 1972, the World Bank has financed the development of Bangladesh with about 4.5 billion dollars. This financing has played an important role in reducing poverty, ensuring sustainable economic growth and in education, health and disaster management.

He pledged the World Bank's continued support to the important reform initiatives undertaken by the interim government of Bangladesh.

During the meeting, Chief Adviser's Special Envoy Lutfi Siddiqui, SDG Affairs Senior Secretary Lamia Morshed and ERD Secretary Md. Senior officers including Shahriar Quader Siddiqui were present.
