Politics of conflict should not return: Amir Khusro

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said, we want to move forward on the path of liberal democracy in a peaceful environment. There have been many clashes, the people of the country have suffered a lot. We are trying to prevent this conflicting politics from returning to Bangladesh. It will succeed only through a quick election. The people will form the elected government and parliament by exercising their right to vote.

He said this while talking to reporters after a meeting with NDM leaders at the BNP Chairperson's political office in Gulshan in the capital on Monday (December 23). After reviewing the ongoing political and current economic situation of the country, BNP has started a series of meetings with the partners from last Saturday (December 21) to decide the next steps.

As part of this, BNP held a meeting with the People's Rights Council led by Mia Moshiuzzaman and Farooq Hasan after the meeting with NDM. For the third time, the BNP met with its partners. BNP will discuss with more like-minded parties in the next couple of days.

In Monday's meeting, various contemporary issues were discussed, including the possible schedule of elections given by the interim government, reforms.

Amir Khosru said, 'We did not know the time indicated by the government regarding the election. It was not discussed with anyone. So, we are not aware of that time. We cannot find any reason as to why the time frame has been extended.'

'Many people are talking a lot as the reason for this. As a result confusion is created in the public mind. We don't see the logical time we talked about for elections.'

“Electoral reforms are the most important now, after that we were supposed to move towards the elections. And the reforms should mainly be in the parliament elected with the people's trust, support and mandate. It is a matter of seeing what reforms they can do now before the elections.'

The BNP leader commented, 'There can be reforms in those matters which have already been agreed upon. And those that do not have a consensus, it has to be done with the people's mandate. There is no need to prolong elections by talking about reforms.'

'Because we are committed to the nation in reforms, we will do that. That is why we have given 31 points. We will implement it through the national government. There is no doubt about this. The most important thing now is the upcoming elections, which the people of the country are eagerly waiting for.'

Amir Khusru said, 'Government will be accountable to the people, to the people who will be accountable. Politicians have to go to the people again and again, to bring back that kind of democratic order in the country. Only through which it is possible to get out of conflict politics, build a stable and peaceful country.'

In response to a question from journalists, Amir Khosru said, 'We who do politics, our responsibility is to return the ownership of the people. Forming a government elected by the people, who will be accountable to the people. The rest who are talking, they are not accountable to the people. Only the elected government will be accountable to the people. We don't care what those who are not responsible think.'
