HAI general secretary MP Bezbaruah said the government is considering seeking incentives for small hotel operators to adopt sustainable practices. He pointed out that large luxury and five-star hotel operators are at the forefront of adopting sustainable practices, while smaller HAI members are lagging behind due to cost issues.

New Delhi. Hotel Association of India (HAI) general secretary M P Bezbarua said the government is considering seeking incentives for small hotel operators to adopt sustainable practices. He told PTI that large luxury and five-star hotel operators are at the forefront in adopting sustainable practices, while smaller members of HAIs are lagging behind due to cost issues. Bezbaruah said, the record of five-star and luxury hotels is exemplary, but we want the smaller members to take the lead in the sustainable campaign.

He said HAI has tried to encourage its members and non-members to join globally accepted certification programs of sustainable practices. He added, however, that some of these programs can be expensive and many smaller hotels cannot afford such costs. He said that if someone has adopted sustainable practices related to water management, recycling or use of plastic, then the government can give incentives by reducing taxes.
