What the hospital authorities are saying
Hospital authorities are describing the death of six children as an ‘accident’.
They claim that two children suddenly fell ill late at night. All six babies were taken to the NICU later in the morning.
Director General of Ad-Din Hospital Dr. Nahid Yasmin says, 11 mothers and six children were admitted in the hospital ward where this child died. He also said that the newborns are one or two days old.
He claimed that the dead children were having trouble breathing because the AC in that ward was off at night.
“A mother asked to turn off the AC at night. Suddenly, after 3 am, two babies fell ill and were taken to the neonatal ICU,” he said.
Ms. Yasmin says, “Since it is an AC ward, it is often cold. The nurse in charge was told by a mother to turn off the AC. It has happened before, many times the AC is turned off and the fan is on.”
However, he did not say anything about the statement made by the director general of the health department that there is no ventilation system in the room.
Miz Yasmin also said that the doctors checked the health of the sick children at night. He says that the doctors advised to take the children back to the ward as their condition is good.
“Six babies were again taken to the New Natal ICU when they fell ill again in the morning. Two died on the way there and the remaining four were put on ICU support. Later, even those four babies could not be saved,” Miz Yasmin told BBC Bangla.
The hospital authorities are claiming that despite all the efforts of the doctors, the children could not be saved in the end.
The director general of the hospital says, “It happened so fast, we didn’t even get a chance to see it properly. Doctors tried in the Neonatal ICU, but the babies were so suffocating that they couldn’t be saved.”
Apart from the information that five more newborns were admitted in that ward, hospital authorities say that five other babies are already under treatment in NICU due to health complications at the time of birth.
“There were six children and 11 mothers in that ward. The remaining five children were already under treatment in the NICU for some reason, they are fine,” said the director general of the hospital. Nahid Yasmin.
