South Korea is going to hold a three-day joint military exercise with the United States and Japan. The exercise, which began on Wednesday (Nov 13), will include fighter jets and maritime patrol aircraft, as well as the US nuclear aircraft carrier USS George Washington. The British news agency Reuters reported this news about the South Korean military.
North Korea recently tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that was condemned by Seoul, Tokyo and Washington. In response to this, the South Korean military is conducting this exercise called 'Freedom Age'.
According to the US State Department, North Korean troops have started participating in Russia's war with Ukraine. A few days after such a claim, the news of this tripartite exercise came to the fore.
In a statement, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the exercise will include South Korean and Japanese warplanes and maritime patrol aircraft, as well as the USS George Washington.
The tripartite exercise was first held earlier this year. The leaders of the three countries agreed to an annual training exercise at a summit in 2023. The exercise was held in this context.
Pyongyang has long condemned joint exercises between South Korea and the United States. The country also called them attack drills.
According to the JCS, the trilateral exercise also includes maritime missile defense training and cyber defense training.
