Even after the fall of the government, the market for all essential products including vegetables was hot. With the change of season, there has been some stability in the upward vegetable market. The price of potato-onion and other vegetables has decreased. However, the market for fish, meat and poultry is still high.
On Friday (17 January) morning, this information was known after visiting Roy Saheb Bazar, Shyambazar, Kaptan Bazar and Nayabazar in Old Dhaka.
It has been seen on the ground that the prices of all kinds of vegetables including potatoes, beans and tomatoes have decreased in the market. Today, potato is Tk 30-35, onion Tk 50, brinjal Tk 45-50 per kg depending on standard, radish Tk 50-60, radish Tk 20, potato Tk 60, papaya Tk 30, carrot Tk 40, tomato Tk 40-50, beans Tk 25 Tk. Cucumbers are being sold at Tk. 40-50 per kg. Apart from this, saffron is being sold at Tk 70, Chichinga Tk 60, Dhundal Tk 70, Shrimp Tk 60, Onion Kali Tk 50, Kachur Lati and Kachurmukhi Tk 80, Sweet Pumpkin Tk 30, Green Chilli Tk 80, Coriander at Tk 50 per kg. Each gourd is being sold at Tk 80, rice pumpkin at Tk 60, cauliflower at Tk 20-30, cabbage at Tk 20. Apart from this, raw bananas are sold at Tk 20, lemons are being sold at Tk 20-25.
Today, desi garlic is selling at Tk 240-250, China garlic at Tk 220-230, China ginger at Tk 240, new Indian ginger at 120 kg. Prices of other commodities did not change much compared to last week.
Ajmir Hossain, a vegetable seller in Raisaheb Bazar, told Bangla Tribune, 'Everything is priced the same as last week. Nothing has gone up in price. Rather, the price of potatoes has decreased.'
Another seller named Shahadat Hossain said, 'The price of vegetables is already low in winter. If this is always the case, then just as we will get peace by selling the goods, the buyers will also get relief by buying them.'
Potato-onion seller Mubarak Mia said, 'The price of potatoes has decreased compared to last week. Domestic onion prices are also within reach now. So Indian onion is not needed. Indian onion is much more expensive than desi onion. If we sell local onions at a fair price, we will also benefit, and the farmers of the country will also benefit.'
Meanwhile, the buyers who come to the market are heaving a sigh of relief after seeing the stable price of vegetables. Jasim Uddin, who came to market in Shyambazar, told Bangla Tribune, 'After winter comes, you can close your eyes and shop in the vegetable market. Everything is reasonably priced. We always expect such a market.'
Fish and meat market is wide
The buyers feel uneasy when they come to the fish and meat market, even if they get relief in the vegetable market. Buyers are worried about when the rising prices of fish and meat will come to a bearable level.
It has been seen on the ground that beef is being sold at the price of Tk 750 per kg in the market. Beef is being sold at Tk 1,150 per kg. Besides, broiler chicken is being sold at Tk 200-210, cock chicken at Tk 340-350, layer chicken at Tk 280-290, country chicken at Tk 550 per kg. A dozen eggs of the farm's chickens are being sold at Tk 135.
Compared to last week, broiler chicken price has increased by Tk 5-10 per kg. The price of cock is the same as before. Besides, the price of beef has increased by Tk 50 per kg. Beef, desi and layer chicken prices are unchanged. The price of farm chicken eggs also remains unchanged.
Hashem Bepari, a meat seller in Nayabazar, told Bangla Tribune about the increase in the price of beef, 'The price of beef is high so the meat has to be sold at a high price. Moreover, you have to pay attention to the price that other sellers sell in the market.' This seller also said that there is a possibility that after a few days beef will be 800 rupees per kg.
Regarding the increase in the price of beef, the seller Matin Butcher told the Bangla Tribune, “The demand for beef and beef is always high. Whether the price increases or decreases, the demand does not decrease, which is why the price does not decrease. This seller also said that he sells one cow and two-three goat meat every day.
Meanwhile, about the increase in the price of chicken meat, a seller said, 'Weddings, picnics and parties are happening in winter. Almost everyone has a barbecue party with chicken. The demand is high so the price has increased.'
According to size and weight, Hilsa fish is Tk 700-2600 in the market today, Rui fish Tk 300-600, Katal fish Tk 400-500, Kaliboush Tk 500-650, Prawn fish Tk 800-1600, Kanchki fish Tk 400, Kai fish Tk 250-1000 Taka and Pabda fish are being sold at Tk 400-600 per kg. Besides, horn fish 500-1000 taka, tengra fish 500-800 taka, boal fish 6500-1000 taka, shoal fish 700-1100 taka, maini fish 600 taka, chital fish 700-1000 taka, sarpunti fish 200-400 taka, roopchanda fish Selling at 800-1200 Tk per kg.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the price of fish and meat, buyers say that although the price of vegetables is somewhat under control in winter, the price of fish and meat is never under control.
A buyer named Tanveer Hasan said, 'It is a challenge for this government to reduce the price of daily necessities including fish and meat. Common people expect only price reduction, nothing else.'
Consumers unhappy with grocery store merchandise and oil prices
Consumers are also dissatisfied with the prices of grocery products such as fish and meat. Meanwhile, the soybean oil market has not normalized despite the price increase. Sellers complain that there is no soybean oil in the store. What is there is very less than the demand. So the price of oil is high. Buyers say that even if the vegetable-potato-onion market is normal, it is the need of the hour to reduce the price of grocery products.
In today's market, big mung dal is Tk 140, small mung dal is Tk 170, small lentil is Tk 135, thick lentil is Tk 110, kesari dal is Tk 110, booter dal is Tk 140, mashkalai dal is Tk 190, double is Tk 70, chickpea is Tk 130, packet Polao rice is being sold at Tk 150, open Polao rice at Tk 110-140 per kg. On the other hand, bottled soybean oil is Tk 175 per liter, open soybean oil Tk 157, packet sugar Tk 125, open sugar Tk 120, flour two kg packet Tk 150, flour two kg packet Tk 115, mustard oil per liter is being sold at Tk 190.
Akalima Akhter, who came to market at the grocery store, told the Bangla Tribune, “Raw market has become normal. But grocery store prices aren't going down. Food prices have been on the rise for a long time. The price of these products should be reduced. Otherwise there will be no relief among people. The government should look at the prices of these products. The common man should at least find some peace by doing the market.'
