Home Minister’s call to review the 18-month performance of the interim government

Interior Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called for an impartial investigation into the 18-month activities of the interim government. He said, ‘The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) should be directed immediately to investigate where the corruption has taken place, who is behind it.’

The Home Minister said this while participating in the discussion on the budget in the National Parliament on Sunday.

The Home Minister gave a strong reply to a speech of Jamaat-e-Islami parliamentarian Shahjahan Chowdhury in the session. Earlier, Shahjahan Chowdhury had claimed that to know the Jamaat, one must know the history of 100 years.

In view of Shahjahan Chowdhury’s statement, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad said that this party was founded on August 26, 1941. As a result, the history of the party has not yet completed 100 years. Besides, during the liberation war of 1971, the then Jamaat-e-Islami strongly opposed the independence of Bangladesh and at that time two leaders of the party joined the cabinet of the government of Pakistan. These things are an irrefutable part of history and legally proven as well.

The Home Minister said that Jamaat-e-Islami’s current election manifesto does not contain any clear promise of Sharia-based state, Islamic judiciary, Islamic economy or implementation of Sharia law. The party has essentially changed its political position over time.

Referring to the corruption white paper of the Awami League government, the minister said that due to rampant corruption, money laundering and political influence in the last one and a half decades, the country’s economy has suffered massive and long-term losses. However, he termed the proposed budget as a ‘New Economic Order’ or ‘New Economic System’. The minister said that social security, agriculture, education, health and protection of the poor have been given top priority in this budget. At the same time, he expressed optimism that no new tax will be imposed on the daily necessities, which will bring relief to the common people.
