Germany's Patriot defense systems in Poland to protect Ukraine

Germany has offered to redeploy Patriot air defense systems to Poland as part of military aid to Ukraine. The German Defense Ministry said on Thursday (Nov 29) that the deployment could take effect early next year. British news agency Reuters reported this news.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in a statement, “With this, we will protect an important logistics hub in Poland, which is crucial for the delivery of military equipment to Ukraine.”

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosniak-Kamis welcomed the decision in a post on social media X.

Earlier, Germany deployed three Patriot units and 300 troops to Poland from January to November 2022. The units were stationed in the town of Zamosc, which is about 50 kilometers from the border with Ukraine. The city is located in southern Poland and serves as an important rail link with Ukraine.

The main reason behind this deployment was the accidental impact of a Ukrainian missile on the Polish village of Przewodow in November 2022. After that incident, there was a fear of conflict spreading on the border.

According to the announcement of the German Ministry of Defense, the Patriot defense system could be deployed in Poland for up to six months. The initiative will help supply military equipment to Ukraine and strengthen defense cooperation between NATO allies.
