CJI DY Chandrachud Reaction on Umar Khalid Bail delay says more than 21 thousand Bail pleas heard in two years tenure. Asked question on delay in bail of Umar Khalid, CJI Chandrachud said


Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud is retiring on November 10 and he says that during his tenure as CJI, he gave priority to bail cases. He said that during his two-year tenure, more than 21 thousand bail petitions were disposed of. He also talked about the delay in the bail of former JNU student Umar Khalid, who is jailed in the Delhi riots case.

CJI Chandrachud had participated in a program of The Indian Express. Here, replying to a question regarding delay in hearing on the bail plea of ​​Omar Khalid in the Delhi riots case, CJI Chandrachud said that a particular case is given importance in the media and then the court is criticized on that particular case.

He said, 'After taking charge as CJI, I decided to give priority to bail matters as it relates to personal liberty. It was decided that every bench of the Supreme Court should hear at least 10 bail cases. 21,000 bail petitions were filed in the Supreme Court between November 9, 2022 and November 1, 2024. During this period, 21,358 bail petitions were disposed of.

During Ganpati Puja, CJI Chandrachud met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Also talked about coming to his residence. He said, 'The Prime Minister came to my house for Ganpati puja. There is nothing wrong in this because there are regular meetings between the people associated with the judiciary and the executive at the social level. We meet at Rashtrapati Bhavan, on Republic Day etc. We talk to the Prime Minister and ministers. During this time, we do not discuss matters on which we have to take decisions, but discuss matters related to life and society in general.

When asked whether he would like to make some changes in the frame of the picture of Ganesh Puja to include the Leader of Opposition (LOP) and the Supreme Court judges, CJI Chandrachud said in a light tone that he would not include the LOP because It is not a selection committee for the appointment of Central Vigilance Commissioner or Director of CBI.
