Nawija Khatun was shocked when he heard about the storm

Satkhira: Nawija Khatun was shocked when he heard about the storm. Because Nawija Khatun, a resident of Malanch River, adjacent to the Sundarbans of Datinakhali village in Burigoalini Union of Shyamnagar Upazila of Satkhira, lost everything in this storm.

After listening to the weather report of the low pressure cyclone recently created in the Bay of Bengal, his forehead was folded in worry again.

Nawija Khatun, who lost everything in Cyclone Aila on May 25, 2009, lost everything, fish enclosure, crop land, and could not forget it even in 15 years.

Nabisha Khatun said, 'Paranda was startled when he heard the storm dog. I don't know what will happen again. He has already heard the forecast of possible cyclone 'Dana'. So what was he thinking while sitting on the embankment that had broken in the previous cyclone.

Nawija Khatun's two sons. She was doing well with her husband and children. But on May 25, 2009, Cyclone Aila hit their happy life. That's not the end, on May 20, 2020 Cyclone Asfan wiped out their remaining assets. In addition, other natural disasters continue to occur on the coast. She has already lost her husband. His two children have been displaced. They were forced to leave their father's ancestral property. But Nawija Khatun is still there looking at her husband's grave in the illusion of her husband's last possession.

Nawija Khatun described Cyclone Aila and said that since morning the sky was overcast and there was light wind. I was doing my homework as usual. Just before the noon call to prayer, a sudden wave of high water came and destroyed everything. Only God knows how I survived that water that day.

Like Nawija, thousands of families living near the embankment in Shyamnagar coastal area of Satkhira were shocked when they heard about the storm. They are the most vulnerable in disasters. Weak embankments are their main cause of concern. When the tidal water in the river rises during the disaster, the embankment repeatedly breaks and floods the locality. Intrusion of salt water disrupts the way of life. All development activities of the government, including food and water sources, are destroyed. Besides, there are not enough cyclone shelters for the people living on the coast.

Recently, several coastal areas adjacent to the Sundarbans have been visited, even though more than a century has passed, many large wounds of Cyclone Aila are still visible.

Meanwhile, the low pressure created in the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea area is staying in the North Bay of Bengal. It may gradually become more concentrated and become a depression.

Meteorologists say that Cyclone 'Dana' will intensify over East Central Bay of Bengal on October 23 and stay close to the coast of West Bengal and Odisha the next morning on October 24.

India's Alipur Meteorological Department said that on the 24th, the wind speed will likely be 100 to 110 km along the coast. It can increase to 120 km per hour. As a result, the sea will be rough.

Cyclone Aila in 2009 also had wind speed of 120 to 130 kmph.

Incidentally, the coastal areas of Satkhira were hit by Cyclone Sidor on 15 November 2007, followed by Cyclone Aila on 25 May 2009, Mahasen on 16 May 2013, Komen on 30 July 2015, Roanu on 21 May 2016, Mora on 30 May 2017, and Cyclone Aila on 3 May 2019. Fani, Bulbul on 9 November 2019, Ampan on 20 May 2020, Yas on 26 May 2021, Ashni on 12 May 2022 and 'Mokha' on 14 May 2023. Cyclone Rimal recently hit the Satkhira coast. It crossed land between the evening of May 26 and the morning of May 27, 2024. At that time, some unions of Khulna, Ashashuni and Shyamnagar upazilas were flooded after the embankment broke. whose wounds have not yet healed.
