Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has given a statement regarding the Russia-India-China (RIC) triumvirate just before the BRICS Summit. He said that these countries have not met formally for the last few years, but even today they maintain a strong relationship. According to news agency ANI, Lavrov said in an interview with a Russian media that the meeting of these countries has not taken place due to Covid and some other things.

Lavrov said that the initiative to hold regular meetings of the Russia-India-China triumvirate was taken in the 1990s. Later this trio expanded and later became BRICS. Brazil and South Africa joined it. On January 1, 2024, four new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and United Arab Emirates were also included in BRICS.

BRICS is not an anti-West country The Russian Foreign Minister said that BRICS is a symbol of the ongoing changes in the world economy. He said that today new economic centers are developing in the world. This is also having a financial impact on the world. BRICS takes into account the needs of its member countries. Other countries also want to become its members. This is a group in which neither one country is ahead nor behind others.

Lavrov also clarified that the purpose of BRICS is not to fight with anyone. Western countries are not included in this, it does not mean that we are against them. BRICS aims to take advantage of their geography, shared history and proximity.

What is BRICS and how powerful is it?

The journey of the BRICS organization to reach where it is now has been completed in three stages…

First stage – RIC i.e. Russia, India and China – in the 1990s these three countries together form an organization. This organization was led by Russian leader Yevgeny Primakov. The purpose of coming together of the three countries was to challenge America's dominance in the world's foreign policy and at the same time to reestablish our relations.

Second stage- BRIC i.e. Brazil, Russia, India and China – In 2001, investment bank Goldman Sachs had described these four countries as the fastest growing economies in the world. After this, in 2009, these countries came together and formed an organization, which was named BRIC.

third stage– BRICS i.e. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – In 2010, South Africa was made a part of this organization to represent the African continent. Then this organization got its final form and it was called BRICS.

Today, BRICS has become the third most powerful economic organization in the world, surpassing the EU.
