The inexhaustible pen of the prisoner 89914053: Chapo’s letters from the Colorado prison

There are two Joaquín Guzmáns. One, known as El Chapo, rose to prominence as the world’s largest drug trafficker. He was feared by his rivals and by the authorities. He accumulated the blood of whoever crossed his path. It didn’t matter whether it was an antagonistic group or innocent civilians. The other, Joaquín Guzmán L., inmate 89914053 of the ADX Florence prison in Colorado, is an older adult, almost 70 years old, who says he suffers from unjust confinement, in inhuman conditions and cannot speak with his family. The North American Justice has sentenced him based on a black legend that has nothing to do with him. This is an obsessive sender asking for mercy in unintelligible English. In reality, they are both the same person. But the first is trying to build that image of the second through dozens of letters written in prison. The myriad of letters from the criminal, sentenced in 2019 to life imprisonment for drug trafficking, reveal the desperation of the person who until recently imposed his will at the command of the Sinaloa Cartel.
