Akhtar questioned about the disappearance of vehicle lines at oil pumps after the price hike

Akhtar Hossain, member secretary of Jatiya Nagrik Party (NCP) and Member of Parliament of Rangpur-4 Constituency raised questions about the disappearance of lines for oil after the increase in fuel prices. He said long queues of vehicles for fuel oil can be seen across the country. That line disappeared after oil prices rose—which naturally raises questions.

Akhtar said these things in a press conference on ‘National Convention on Fuel, Economy, Human Rights, Reforms and Referendum’ at the party’s temporary central office at Rupayan Trade Center in Banglamotor in the capital on Saturday.

Akhtar Hossain said that despite the clear opinion of the people in the referendum, the government has denied that verdict. It was their duty to form the Constitutional Reform Council, but they did not do so.

This member of parliament from Rangpur-4 constituency said, ‘After the 10th National Assembly elections, a consensus was formed between the political parties as about 70 percent of the people voted in favor of the referendum. Accordingly, there was an expectation of speedy implementation of reforms. But we saw that after the formation of the government, the promise was withdrawn. Instead of implementing the verdict of the referendum, it has sometimes been termed as a “deed of fraud”, sometimes as “unconstitutional”.

Akhtar Hossain said that a higher structure institution is needed to bring changes in the basic structure of the constitution. Out of that need came the idea of a Constitutional Reform Council, which no party had previously rejected.

Expressing concern about the banking sector, Akhtar Hossain said, ‘For those who have looted thousands of crores of rupees, an opportunity has been created to get back the ownership only by returning a very small amount of money. This will open the way for more looting in the future.’

Sarwar Tushar said that a day-long national convention on energy, economy, human rights and referendum will be held on Sunday. Political scientists, sociologists, economists, educationists, lawyers and representatives of civil society will participate in various sessions of this convention besides NCP leaders.

Joint convener of the party Monira Sharmin and others were present in the press conference.
