The number of constituencies in the country may increase before the Lok Sabha elections 2029. The Central Government is preparing to implement the Women’s Reservation Act i.e. Nari Vandan Act from the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections. According to sources, under this process, work is also underway on a plan to increase the total seats of Lok Sabha from the current 543 to approximately 816.
In this sequence, the highest increase will be in Uttar Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state and the state with the largest number of constituencies in the Lok Sabha, is likely to see the largest increase in seats. Currently 80 Lok Sabha MPs are elected from UP. If delimitation takes place, the number of constituencies in the state can reach 120.
In the current situation, 63 general seats are reserved in the state and 17 seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC). If the number of seats reaches 120 after delimitation, then the general category seats may increase to 94-95 and the Scheduled Caste quota may increase to 25-26 seats. When the first elections were held in the country in 1951, there were 69 constituencies in UP. At that time Uttarakhand was not separated from the state.
