Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Bida Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmood bin Harun said, “Our competing countries are in the same boat with us.” So, the way their journey will be, we will probably be there. I am not at all worried about whether the United States changed the United States exactly 5 days before the investment conference became negative for us. I personally think, it's a good signal. We will use it to use it and try to create a better investment environment in the future.
He said this at a press briefing organized at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Sunday (April 7th).
Ashiq Chowdhury said, “I see the issue of US tariffs as an opportunity.” Because the United States has decided to impose tariffs – United States Trade Representatives have a report on Bangladesh. The situation in Bangladesh has been reported. Depending on that report, the United States has made many decisions. That report mentions some basic reforms for us. Our regulatory reforms, in the case of custom duty, corruption – have been mentioned in several issues such as corruption. But we also wanted to do these reforms. The interim government wanted to be a major reform here in Bangladesh, so that it is easy for investors to do business in Bangladesh in the future.
“This additional imposed tariff in the United States is a benefit to us.” I think that in this opportunity we can reform a lot of reforms on our investment system. That would be good for us. The negative in it I don't see anything at all. By using this opportunity, it is possible to make our investment environment progress.
Ashiq Chowdhury said that the new policy of Trump would not only have a single impact in Bangladesh. Inflation, not only Bangladesh will go through interest rates, but also for everyone else. There is nothing to look at Bangladesh separately. If the whole world goes through an inflation stress, it will apply to everyone. That is why it seems to me that there will be no more impact in Bangladesh alone than in other countries.
Chief Advisor Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir were present on the occasion.
