Tensions are rising between Iran and Syria

After Syria's new foreign minister, Asad Hassan al-Shibani, called on Iran to respect Syria's sovereignty and the will of the people, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said it would not be right to make any decisions about the future of Syria. Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported this news.

In an interview published on Telegram on Wednesday, Arakchi said, “This moment is too early to draw conclusions about the situation in Syria.” For us and others who think Syria has won, too.

Assad Hassan al-Shibani warned Iran that they will be held responsible for spreading instability in Syria. However, he did not clarify which comment he made in response.

Araqchi indicated that much would depend on what Syria's position is towards Israel, although Iran continues to try to maintain bilateral relations since the fall of longtime Iranian ally Bashar al-Assad in Syria.

Meanwhile, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called the recent events in Syria a conspiracy of the United States and Israel, saying that the youth of Syria will take a firm stand to protect their future and will succeed inshallah.

During the Syrian civil war, Iran spent huge amounts of money on behalf of Bashar al-Assad's government with Russian support. But with the fall of the Assad regime, the road link to Hezbollah, a key member of the Iran-led resistance coalition, has been lost.

Khamenei noted that Syria's cooperation was particularly significant for Iran during the Iraq-Iran war in the 1980s. So Iran wanted to repay this debt.

However, the new Syrian leadership may take Iran to international court to demand compensation, the unnamed sources said.
